Recess Committee Meeting Report

The Recess Committee held its first meeting October 28th. Steve Fleck attended and was able to provide some clarity around recess/lunch supervision versus recess/lunch activities volunteers. The committee learned that a CUPE representative MUST be employed for recess/lunch supervision, but a parent or other responsible person can volunteer to lead a recess/lunch “club”.
 The committee brainstormed some Indoor/Outdoor Activities. The intent is to spark interest from the immense population of parents/guardians who may have a special skill or interest that they would like to share.  The activities that were brainstormed are as follows:

Inside:

  • Lego
  • Hand held video games
  • Computer time
  • Trading club (stickers, hockey cards, marbels, etc.)
  • Book club
  • Board games
  • Chess & checkers
  • Movie room
  • Dancing
  • Yoga & Pilates
  • Boot camp
  • Drama club
  • Band
  • Drumming
  • One-off’s (special presentations…. eg: a science guy, magician, etc.)
  • Rock band
  • Cooking
  • Science
  • Rocket building
  • Crafts
  • Scrapbooking
  • Photography
  • Hackey sac making
  • Knitting & crocheting

Outside:

  • X-country skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Mountain biking
  • Crazy carpets (a safe hill would need to be built – the current hills are not safe)
  • Active schools equipment (skipping ropes, balls, Frisbees, etc.)
  • Hackey sac
  • Cross country running
  • Kickball
  • Bootcamp
  • Snow sculptures – in designated area
  • Road hockey (on the playground)
  • Skipping/hula hoops
  • Four square
  • Parachutes
  • Photography

 It will be suggested that the adult volunteers who lead these clubs be paired with another adult volunteer or a pair of older students from the Leadership Program.

 Mr. Fleck also provided the committee with information regarding the areas within EHPE that can be used for these clubs.  The areas are as follows:

  • Gymnasium (capacity: 60-70 students)
  • Multi-purpose room (capacity: 40-50 students)
  • Computer room (25-30 students)
  • Band room
  • Change rooms
  • Pod open areas
  • Front foyer
  • Art room (not confirmed)

 Prior to the meeting being adjourned, the following Action Items were put forth:

  • Request the implementation of a Leadership Program
  • Inventory the equipment on hand
  • Paint the basketball court/sidewalks
