Mrs. Attree’s and Mrs. McGraw’s two gr. 7 classes at École Heather Park Elementary School started off their week by looking forward to not only the summer holidays but listening to an excellent presentation by Bruce Northrop, District Career Programs Coordinator discussing the different community programs that will be available to them in high school that help students think about what their future might hold. Six programs discussed included: Junior Initial Attack, Prince George Fire Rescue, RCMP Youth Academy, COFI Trades Tour and Resource Management Camp, Heavy Metal Rocks and Northern health—Health Day Circuits.
Also discussed was the Career Technical Centre (CTC) program, currently coordinated by Tim Power. In the CTC program, Grade 11 and 12 students combine education at CNC with academic studies at high school, eventually graduating with both their Grade 12 Dogwood Diploma and a college certificate. Some available programs include: carpentry/joinery, culinary arts,electrical/electronics, heavy duty/commercial transport, millwright/machinist and welder fitting skills.
Mark June 17th on your calendars for HPE’s first ever Sports Day. Grade 6 students will help guide K-gr.5 students through a variety of stations which may include an obstacle course, blind volleyball, a hockey shoot, water brigade, etc. Many games will focus on gross motor activities such as balancing, throwing & catching, body & spatial awareness and locomotor skills. Naturally good cooperation and high energies by all are expected. Also on Friday, Grade 7 students will be roller-skating at the Roll-a-dome in the morning. In the afternoon all will participate in the afternoon tug-o-war event and everyone can also participate in the FREE school-wide hot lunch provided by PAC.
The following week will start off with some “sis boom bah” as the Heather Park Band will do a year end concert for the intermediate classes. Band students will showcase their talents and hopefully potential students will be recruited for next year’s band program..
