2011 January 10 Newsletter 2

Important Dates

Next PAC meeting is Wednesday, January 12th.  The meeting starts at 7pm, social time starts at 6:45pm. Brian Pepper (superintendent) and John McLay (assistant superintendent) plan to attend this meeting to address parent concerns. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss our school.  We’re fortunate to have them come, so if you can make it please attend. Childcare will be available.

January 14 – check your child’s backpack for free tickets to the hockey game Friday night!

Holiday Celebration

Thank to all the families who attended our first holiday pot luck on December 16th, and to our great volunteers! Special thanks to Tracey and Lorraine for leading the volunteers. It was a great success, and it was wonderful to see so many people come out for the holiday season. We had lots of great food, live music, and a special appearance by Santa Claus (thanks, Santa and helpers!). As well, we also raised money in silent auction donations. Could this be the start of a new tradition?

Upcoming events being planned include movie nights, a fun fair evening, and a school dance. Look for more information to follow.

We have not had any volunteers to take over the organization of the concession area. As there does not appear to be great interest in this area, we will not be attempting to open a concession this school year.

Playground Update – What is Known

The earliest any playgrounds can be moved to Heather Park would be in the Spring, after melt. At the moment, the School District seems to be indicating that they will be moving two playgrounds – one from Austin Road and one from Springwood – at that time. However, we have not had any formal decision communicated to us.

Did you know…

The murals that were recently installed in the foyer are from Springwood Elementary and Heather Park Middle School.  Students at Springwood Elementary created a mural each year and the murals were hung on the outside of the school.  SD57 staff moved one of the murals to our school in December and we are now fortunate to have the murals hanging in our school for all to enjoy. A stained glass window from Austin Road will soon be installed.

School Planning Council

On February 9th, the PAC will be holding elections for the School Planning Council. Through these Councils, parents partner with educators in planning for improvement of student achievement in our schools. Every SPC includes three representatives of the school PAC, elected by secret ballot by the PAC. Each PAC rep must be a parent or guardian of a student enrolled in the school, and one rep must be an elected officer of the PAC.
